What Company Produces Wood Pellets?

Pellets are becoming a popular alternative to wood and charcoal for these outdoor cooking methods. The wood pellets will even introduce smoke into the propane-powered roasting zone, which wasn’t possible before. So, which company produces wood pellets?

What does our research reveal about which company produces wood pellets? By using burned or leftover fibers to make wood pellets, the wood pellet industry is reducing waste and converting these chips into valuable low-carbon biofuels.

How are wood pellets made?

To make wood pellets, manufacturers remove water from incoming wood fibers, grind the fibers into dust, and press the dust into small cylinders – pellets – usually 6 or 8 mm in diameter and up to 40 mm long. The process uses heat to make lignin, a natural polymer found in wood, acts as a glue, holding compressed particles together.

The result is a dry, highly compressed product with a high energy content that is easy to handle and can be efficiently transported over long distances.

Efficient, sustainable energy

Wood pellets are used in everyday life and industry. Many people around the world who live in colder climates use wood pellet boilers or stoves for warmth. Today’s modern boilers are so highly automated that they require no manual operation or maintenance other than loading pellets for the winter, pressing a button to activate the system and removing the ash six months later.

Simply manually load the pellets into the oven’s hopper and burn continuously to create an efficient and even heat source. For industrial power generation, wood pellets are used as a low-carbon alternative to coal. The particles are crushed into dust, the dust is mixed with air, and the resulting mixture is continuously fed into a flame that creates steam to generate electricity.

What is the production process of wood pellets?

Untreated wood chips and waste first pass through a shredder to reduce the size of the material. These smaller pieces are then ground into wood fibers, or in some cases into a fine powder. The wood fibers are then scanned with a magnet to remove any metal that may have entered the wood at any stage of the process.
Excess moisture is then removed from the wood fibers through a drying process that reduces the moisture content of the wood to 6%.
After the drying process, the wood can be made into pellets using a pellet mill. A pelletizer is a large press that passes wood fibers through a die to produce pellets of the desired size. The process involves heat and extreme pressure to push the wood fibers through the particle-sized holes in the mold so that the particles are on the other side. Heating is an important aspect of the process that helps the pellets retain their shape after leaving the back of the mold.
